Robert and Sterling Collett, first cousins, grew up as neighbors in Morganton, N.C., where their families managed high-end furniture businesses. The cousins were raised with strong work ethics and a passion for creating impeccable environments that enhance the quality of life.
For many generations, the Collett family spent significant time in the Blue Ridge Mountains. With a summer home on Jonas Ridge, they hiked mountain trails and swam crisp rivers in summer, toured Burke and Avery county hills enjoying the peaking of foliage colors during fall and skied mountain slopes during winter.
These experiences created in the cousins a deep-seated appreciation for the natural beauty and habitat of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The cousins have imposed this preservationist philosophy in their development of the 140-acre tract known as The Farm in Banner Elk. The Farm is being developed by Horsebottom Ridge, LLC, of which Robert and Sterling are managing partners.
Dennis Lehmann, a renowned land and design consultant, and his son Mark share ownership with the Colletts. Together they have created a low-traffic, gated community with walking trails, trout ponds and a pavilion with a Virginia fieldstone outdoor fireplace.
At the Colletts' insistence, residential profile on The Farm is low. Inconspicuous paved roadways seem to disappear into the mountainside. Homes pass design tests before construction to make sure they architecturally blend into the landscape.
The Farm's home sites are offered by Ruffin Properties, a concern wholly
owned by the Colletts.
